We had the chance to collaborate with GCI engineers on a dedicated Google API for art pieces geo locations. It's still private but may open in the future.
On v2 launch, Google promoted it on the homepage of 22 countries, including Europe, North America, Asia. We had a couple millions visitors in one day, with peaks at 10k users/sec. But Google App Engine auto scales so well....
